SHIRE RATES AND WORK-
ING EXPENSES.
The annual conference of returned
soldier settlers concluded at Anzac House
yesterday, when a number of motions
affecting details In settlers' relations with
the Closer Settlement Commission were
discussed. Tlie burning question of shire
rates, which seriously affects the settler
and tho municipalities, many of which
are 111 heavy arrears on their collections,
was ngain debated, tlie conference urging
the commission to allow ll-'.-iie rates as
working expenses.
Tho following resolutions were car
ried;—
