A case of interest to charily workeis
was brought before -Essendon court yes
terday. /Henry Boolcy, of . Jfoi ibyvnong-
load, Aloonee Bonds; Etliel Thompson,
married, of Bloomfiohl-i-oad, Ascot A ale ,

Essondon ; Arthur Manning, of Brunei-
street, Essendon, and John l'liiclies, of
Mnrshall-slrect, were charged with having
acted in tho disposal of Tickets for an
illegal lottery;

that they . were liable to a, line of £5 for
each ticket sold. They said they were un

of local unemployed. ,

Sergeant Burrows (prosecuting) snid he
could not discriminate in rnieh matters.
Tho police were faced with n great dilli-
milty. l'eoplc were daily seeking advice
on means by which tlicy could raise money
for various 'charitable objects. :
Mr. O'Grudy, B.M., snid lie realised
the difficulLy li) knowing where to draw
the line. The three other occupants ot
the bench (justices of the pence) con
sidered it would meet tlio situation if
the case were adjourned for 62 weeks.
This would lie done, but it must liot lm
regarded as a precedent.
