Migrants Fail
in Actions on
Hostel Closing
A Supreme Court ruling
by Mr. Justice Sholl on Sat
urday upheld the ejection of
two migrants from hostels
controlled by Commonwealth
Hostels Ltd., of King-street,
Melbourne.
The migrants, Leslie Mar-
shall, of Coburg Migrant
Hostel, Cumberland - road,
Pascoe Vale, and George
Joseph Cochrane, Royal
Park Migrant Workers'
Hostel, sought an injunction
restraining the company
from excluding them from
the premises.
They alleged that in a
letter dated October 31 the
company indicated it would
exclude them and withdraw
services and facilities.
Each plaintiff also sought
damages.
Refusing to grant the in
junction, Mr. Justice Sholl
said the Commonwealth was
conducting the Royfd Park
hostel at a loss of £50 daily
and the Coburg hostel at a
loss of £30 a day, probably
due to fewer migrants.
The staffs of both hostels
had been given notice and
arrangements made to close
the centres.
