Sir Walter
Massy Greene
SIR Walter Massy
Greene, who died yes
terday, was born at
Wimbledon, England, in
1874. He came to Aus
tralia when 17, and for
seven years was in the
service of the Bank of
New South Wales.
From banking he turned
to farming, and entered
Federal politics in 1913 as
Liberal member for Rich
mond (New South Wales).
He was party Whip and
later Whip of the coalition
war Government.
In five years he reached
Ministerial rank in charge
of Prices Regulation and
Food Control.
From 1918 until 1921, Sir
Walter Massy Greene was
Minister for Trade and Cus
toms, and was regarded as
one of the most outstanding
men to hold the post. He
was Minister for Defence
and the Navy, 1921-23.
His defeat by Mr. Roland
Green at the 1922 general
election was one cf the most
surprising political upsets
of the day.
From 1923 until ill-health
forced his retirement in
1938, he was a New South
Wales member of the Senate,
and held office as Honorary
Minister in the Lyons Go
vernment of 1932.
He was knighted in 1932.
He was a director of
Amalgamated- Zinc Ltd.,
Australian Knitting Mills
Ltd., Austral Pilk and Cot
ton Mills Ltd., Emu Bay
Railway Co. Ltd. and Yarra
Falls Ltd., of Melbourne.
In 1915, Sir Walter Massy
Greene married Lulu May
Lorn ax, nf Tenterfleld, New
South Wales.
Lady Greene, two sons
and one daughter survive
him.
