Oxford Univ. Press
Branch Elevated
NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (A.A.P.).— Mr.
Frank Eyre, manager of the Oxford
University Press in Australia, said here
yesterday that his organisation had
been given full branch status
In New York briefly on
his way back to Mel
bourne, after a month's
visit to England, Mr. Eyre
said: "While in London, I
put the finishing touches
to the arrangements to
make us a self-governing
branch— it's like giving us
Dominion status."
Hitherto, he said, the
branch had Avorked under
the direction of -the head
office in London. The
move to full ' branch
status had been begun
about a year ago, and
now had been completed.
The development, lie
said, was likely to lead
to greater activity by
the Oxford University-
Press in publishing
books in Australia, as
well as selling them to
the trade.
Mr. Eyre said his
branch had already pub
lished some books in Aus
tralia and at present was
embarking on an Aus
tralian Government pro
ject' of text books to
teach the natives of New
Guinea to speak and
write English.
He said the Govern
ment licensing' system for
the importation of books
had been "generously"
operated, and had not
greatly affected the trade,
except in the case of
newly established firms.
These had been affected
by basing of the licence
quota on 1950 turnover.
Mr. Eyre is leaving New
York today for Canada.
He will spend four days
there before flying back
to Melbourne, spending
a week in Honolulu and
another in Fiji oil busi-
ness.-
