Surprise Ending Firms
in Betting on Cups

Surprise Ending, already being acclaimed the greatest
New Zealand mare to come to Australia since Desert Gold,
has leaped into favor for both the Caulfield and Melbourne
Cups.
She scored a . clear-
cut vict o r y over
Wodalla and K ing
Amana in her Aus
tralian debut in the
Quality , Handicap at
Moonee V a l l e y, on
.Saturday.

Although she Impressed .
..some track . observers at
Mentonc Surprise Ending
has not been reported for
any particularly fast
work.
But just before leaving
New Zealand she won a
Canterbury handicap. V.
Her owner-trained - J. F.
Kerr was confident 'she
would be able to win first
up in Melbourne and sup-
ported her well.
For Both Cups
- He said after the race
Suprise Ending would run
in both the Caulfield and
Melbourne Cups.
Mr. Kerr is most optimis
tic about the Caulfield Cup.
He said his only con-
' ceri at present was the
penalty the mare would
get in the Melbourne Cup
for winning at Caulfield.
Now the mare had shown
she was in top form, he ex
pected leading New Zealand
jockey W. Broughton would
come "to Melbourne to ride
her in the cups.
Because of the varying re
ports about the manner in
which Surprise Ending's
track work, 7/1 was obtain
able early and her price
hardened only half a point
at barrier rise.
Wodalla Firmed
Flash Fox opened equal

drifted to 9/2. Melbourne
Cup winner Wodalla, came
in very firmly from 6/1 to
9/2.
South Australian King
Amana was heavily backed
at 5/1. ' '
Surprise Ending was not.
in the first half-dozen over
the first furlong, but
approaching the home turn
she came around the field
very quickly.
She had no difficulty in
wresting the lead from
Wodalla at the straight
entrance and finished full
of running, more than two
lenths ahead.
It was a most impressive
Caulfield Cup trial, and
compared more than favor
ably with the victory of

Fast in the John F. Feehan
Stakes at Moonee Valley the
previous week.
Surprise Ending cost Mr.
Kerr 110 guineas as a
yearling.
Her wins as a three-year-
old included the N.Z. St.
Leger and the Great North
ern Oaks.
She carried 8.7 on Satur
day. In the Caulfield Cup
she has 8.5 and in the Mel
bourne Cup 8.4. .
Wodalla ran a .most en
couraging race and owner
Mr. E. A. Underwood was
satisfied with his display, j
He is to run in the Turn-
bull Stakes, mile and a half,
at Flemington next Satur
day.
Flash ' Fox and Sunish
were not impressive, but
King Amana, who won the
1952 Moonee Valley Cup and
was second in the Caulfield
Cup of that year, did credit-,
ably.
Olympic Girl was unfor
tunate in being . unable to
secure a run arid she did
well to run fourth.
The market on the cups'
double, was brick: For the
first leg. greatest _ demand
was for Rising Fast or Sur
prise Ending.
They were bra'cketed for
many thousands with - at
least 12 of the more popular
Melbourne Cup aspirants.
