Major-General
Steele Acting
Chief of S.E.C.
Major-General- C. S. Steele,
consulting engineer and com
pany director, has been, ap
pointed acting chairman of
the State Electricity- Commis
sion.

nounced last - night by. the
Minister for Electrical Under
takings (Mr. Kent Hughes) .
It will date, from May. 1 until
_ October 31.
Major-General Steele will
become associated' with the
chairman . (Mr. G. G. Jobbins)
early in April, and take charge
from May 1, when Mr. Job-
bins commences final leave
prior to retirement after June
30.
Because the State Electricity
Commission Act stipulates that
the chairman's duties shall
be full time, Major-General
Steele has' been granted leave
of absence from a number of
directorships which he holds.
Mr. Kent Hughes said the
salary which Major-General
Steele would be paid while act
ing chairman would be an
nounced within a few days.
Major-General Steele is aged
57,uvas educated at Scotch Col
lege and the University of Mel
bourne. He had a distinguished
record in both world wars.
Alter serving as cmei en
gineer of the A.I.F. from 1939
to 1940, he held the appoint
ment of Engineer in Chief,
Australian Military Forces,
from 1942 to 1946.
The State Government has
been calling applications from
Australia and overseas for the
£6000-a-year office of perma
nent chairman of the State
Electricity Commission.
It expects to be able to
choose the new chairman be
fore October 31.
