EFFORT TO AVERT
POWER STOPPAGE
Compulsory Meeting
Tomorrow
The Chief Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. G, A-
Mooney) yesterday summoned the State Electricity Com
mission and the Federated Engine Drivers and Fire
men's Association to a compulsory conference tomorrow
morning.
This last-minute move
could avert the black-outs
and power cuts which seem
inevitable if the union car
ries out its threat to hold
one-day stoppages..
Yesterday the S.E.C. re
ferred to Mr. Mooney the
union's claim for a 50 per
cent rise in marginal rates;
A few hours later the con
ference was called.
The S.E.C, said yesterday
industry faced a two-day
power black-out If the union
held 24-hour stop-work
meetings at Yallourn and
Newport power stations on
alternate days.
No suburban trains could
run on the day Newport
power station was closed.
"In addition, shops and
business houses would in
evitably suffer drastic elec
tricity cuts on both days,"
stated the commission.
Tramways also would be
affected.
The commission added
that Yallourn and Newport
together supplied most of
Victoria's power and a stop
page of work at either
station would cut supply by
nearly one half on that
day.
Mr. Scott said if a stoppage
was held the association , would
consider what further action it
was prepared to take.
Members of the association
are all "key" employes in
S.E.C. power houses, which ...
would be unable to operate if
any prolonged dispute deve
loped.
