Plea to Lift
All Bus Fares
A warning was given yes
terday;: that thousands . of
Melbourne travellers will
be without bus services
soon unless the Govern
ment grants uniform In
creases to private opera
tors.
The warning, was given, by
the president of the Metro
politan Omnibus , Operators'
Association, Mr. H. R. Spen
cer, when commenting on the
announcement that tramway
bus fares were likely to be in
creased soon.
"Private operators are no
more able to carry on without
fare rises than tramway buses,
which, being Government-
owned, do not even have be
make a profit," he added.
"If it is right to grant an
overall increase in fares to
Government buses, how can
the piecemeal approach to
the private operators' case
be justified?" Mr. Spencer
asked.
, Mr. Spencer said that hi
July the Government had
granted increases to some pri
vate services and refused them
to others'. '
This had resulted in pas
senger's transferring their cus
tom from the services which
had obtained increased fares
to those which had been re
fused.
Some operators were now In
a worse financial position than
they were before the fare
rises were granted.
