ARDASHIR'S
CUP WIN
Racegoers at the Mornlngton Rac
ing Club's meeting yesterday had a
day of thrills and incidents, with close
finishes and excellent contests. The
attendance, takings and totalisator in
vestments constituted a record.
. In the Mount Martha Trial Handi
cap the finish was so close between

Bpectlve jockeys (H. Badger- and S.
-Martin) seemed puzzled as to the ver
dict. Badger said he thought Martin
had won on Koritza by a neck, and
Martin said immediately . he iiasnea
.past the post, "Well, I landed It that
(time." Martin turned his mount to
return at the head of the placed
horses, but the judge waved him back,
ins- he had given the verdict to Sart-
horn by half a head.
The consistent but unlucky gelding
Ardashir finished strongly to defeat
the even-money favorite, Lord Wind-
fburra, by half a neck in the Morning-
ton Cup. A lively pace was set at the
. start. Vanitare was first to break the
-line, followed by Lord Windburra and
'Chortle. At the six furlongs Chortle
was going strongly In front of Wind-
beau. Rounding the turn for home
(Lord Windburra drew on Chortle, with
-Ardashlr making a run on the rails.
jAs they straightened up for the run
in Ardashir drew away, and seemed set
for a comfortable win, when he swung
'out suddenly towards the outside rails.
Lord Windburra then drove on the
inside, but Ardashir recovered, and
Bcored a narrow victory. Ardashir won
a Warrnambool Cup two years ago.
and recently scored three second
places. Prior to the start Chortle gave
an exhibition of . buckjumping, with
Furtell aboard, and at one time looked
like jumping the rail.
Curia, a stable mate of Lucrative,
confirmed the good form recently
, shown' by her at Flemington by win-
Ijung the Balcombe Encourage by a
(length and a- quarter from Shandon
Belle.
Excitement was caused when Epi
gram stumbled and lost his rider (S.
McKee) at the end of the first furlong
in the Mount Eliza Handicap, which
was won cleverly by the Beau- Fils,
mare. Kerfils by a neck from Brave
Mark. The stewards later held an in
quiry into the incident. ' McKee said
