MEN, MORE MEN,
MUNITIONS
; I
Mr. Evatt Stresses
Australia's Need
OTTAWA, April 9 (A.A.P.).
The Australian envoy to America
(Mr. Evatt) arrived here to-day and
was met by Mr. Mackenzie King and
the Australian High Commissioner
(Sir William Glasgow).
Mr. Evatt told a press conference
that he did not blame Canada because
little or nothing of Canadian war pro
duction had been applied for Austra
lian use. The plain fact was that
Canada had fulfilled her heaviest
commitments to England and other
countries. Australia needed men, and
more men, also munitions, and he was
confident machinery would be. estab
lished to provide a stream of supplies.
As tyr. Churchill had said, "Give
us the materials and we will finish
the job of knocking out the
Japanese."
When questioned regarding a
"Canadian token force" for Australia,
Mr. Evatt replied, "I have not a
word to say. That is a matter for
the High Commands, and the coun
tries concerned. The. allocations oi
men and materials should be solely
the responsibility of the combined
British and American councils and
decided strictly on the basis of the
need for efficiency In combating the
enemy. The whole question should be
kept out of politics. These are days
of great crisis for the British nations,
and I have no doubt we will go
through to victory, if every moment
is devoted to the one supreme job
the hour of victory may not be so
long delayed as some would tell us."
It is officially announced from
Cairo that Nahas Pasha has ordered
the immediate arrest of the former
Premier All Maher Pasha "for rea
sons of public security."
