PLANE UNDER
FIRE
"Prohibited Area"
Over Melbourne
An aircraft on a "travel flight"
from a R.A.A.F. station In Victoria
was fired on over Melbourne yester-
day morning by anti-aircraft bat-
teries.
An official statement issued later by
the Minister of Air stated that at the
time the aircraft was flying in error
over a prohibited area.
Fortunately, in the circumstances,
the aircraft was not hit, and the
pilot continued on his course.
Mr. Drakeford said the incident
showed that our anti-aircraft bat-
teries were constantly ready to meet
emergencies, and could be relied on
to deal quickly with enemy aircraft
which attempted to fly over Austra-
lian territory.
The public should be ready for any
emergency when it heard anti-aircraft
fire, said Mr. Drakeford. In the event
of an enemy raid people would re-
ceive a warning by the sounding of
sirens.
In the early hours of February 28
an R.A.A.F. plane, off its schedule
course and flying over a Melbourne
defence area, was fired on.
