CAULFIELD GUINEAS TO BE RUN TO-DAY
CUP MEETING OPENS
Nuffield, the Public
Choice
Review By Tasman
Guineas to-day, and the Caulfield Cup only a week
away. The Spring campaign is now in full swing. Victorian
class horses who visited Sydney for tho A.J.C. carnival have
returned, and there has been an influx of inter-State horses
and representatives from New Zealand. The interest is
approaching its peak, and the opening of the V.A.T.C.
meeting should provide thrilling racing.
There are thirteen acceptors for the
Caulfleld Guineas, consisting of eleven
colts and two geldings. All are to carry
8.3, and It is confidently expected that,
fresh from his A.J.O. Derby triumph,
Nuffield will account for the opposition.
At his first start as a three-year-old he
won the Randwick bluo ribbon, and ac
complished the task In a highly efficient
manner. On being taken to Sydney, his
preparation was interrupted by a leg
injury, and J. Holt was unable to give
him a thorough race try-out prior to the
Derby. Nuffield threw oft those diffi
culties In the manner of a first class colt
dull of courage. He easily settled the
moderate Held opposed to him and,
.although the class to-day will be better,
Nuffield had no trouble In running the
mile and a half In 2.32, which was only
% of a second outside Phar Lap's
record for the race. Nuffield has worked
nicely since returning to Epsom, . and
should add to the turf honors won by
his breeder-owner, Mr. 0. B. Kellow.
Of a number expected to run out a
fast mile with the favorite, Attlcus, In
view of his record smashing work on
the track at Mentone, may fully extend
Nuffield. This half-brother to Dunloc
showed his quality by winning very easily
in open company, a division of the Wel
ter handicap at Mentone on September
17, and will be produced in the best con
dition by R. D. O'Donnell. Destiny Bay
was flying high when he was amongst
the competitors at weight for age to
oppose Ajax In the Underwood Stakes
and the Melbourne Stakes. At Fleming-
ton he was running prominently for six
furlongs but, of course, was overshadowed
at the conclusion. He is bound to be
sharpened up and, amongst horses of his
own age, con be . expected to do better.
His second to Lord Windburra In a divi
sion of the mile race for three-year-olds
at Caulfleld on August 13 was impressive.
But for going wide entering the straight
he may have got closer to the winner.
A placing to-day should be within his
powers.
Brethren did not go kindly In the Mel
bourne Stnkes, but this Verblus colt Is
good class, and won the Gibson Car-
michacl Stakes at Flemlngton In March
last. Caragona makes no appeal. Caption
failed badly in the Moonee Valley Slakes,
but would only need to reproduce the
finishing effort he showed in running
second to Kingdom at this course a little
more than a month ago to be In the
leading division at the Judge. Raoburn,
from New Zealand, .ran last at Woodend
on September 28 and, on that display,
can be dismissed.
Hilton should worthily represent Mr.
W. R. Kembell. His fifth In AJax's race
last Saturday, with a similar position
In the Leslie Stuart Stakes at Mentone,
added lo three placlngs prior to that,
puts him into the picture. Carpentler
has not to date Justified the high opinion
held of him in some quarters, and Tre-
genna has shaped poorly since third to
Sir Harold and Grand Song at Moonee
Valley in March. Backed to favoritism
in the Leslie Stuart Stakes at Mentone,
Tactical started slowly, and, although
making up some ground towards the
close, was eighth at tho end. He
displayed pace for six furlongs In the
Stand Handicap, but weakened to tenth.
The distance Is shorter to-day, but he
goes up 13 lb.
Donnevirko was a consistent two-year-
old performer. His only start this sea
son was in the Moonee Valley Stakes,
won by Casslo, nnd he was a fair fourth.
He Is another likely to bo on hand along
the straight.
