MANY INJURIES
TO PLAYERS
"Football Not
Rough"
In the opinion of League officials the
unusual number of casualties among
players in last Saturday's matches
was not the result of rough
play. A correspondent of "The Age"
suggests that If the injuries were not
caused accidentally the umpires must
be at fault in not reporting players.
Most of the injuries occurred in the
Richmond-Carlton game at Punt-road.
This match was certainly played In
vigorous fashion, but the football was
clean, and there were no questionable
incidents. The umpire had to caution
only one player for what he considered
unduly vigorous play, and the
incident was not serious enough to
report. Experience of past seasons
has shown that on some Sat
urdays there is an unusual crop of
accidents, while on other days the
casualty list is a very small one. The
hardness of the grounds, due to the
extremely dry season, is blamed by
some coaches for many of the In
juries sustained by League players this
year.
