| last British film, in which she wears
| some startling creations, that he de
cided he would make her "the best

"|P ERHAPS Annabella's first rebuff In
Hollywood will be an omen of
success for her second American ven
ture. She is now playing In Suez
with Tyrone Power and Loretta Young,
the story of which centres round the
romance associated with de Lesseps's
efforts to construct the canal. Her
film career really began with a set
back. she once said. It was after her
father, M. Charpentier, who was a per-
ionnl friend of Lord Baden-Powell,
ind who founded the French national
icout movement, had given his con-
ient for her to appear on the screen.
Her opportunity came when Abe)
3ancc, director, chose her for a small
iart in his spectacular production Na-
lolcon. She was sent to Corsica, where
|lie film wns being "shot," and was
blade to dress up in a wonderful
icriod costume. When the director
law her he said, "No, you'll never do.
iTou had better go home." Everything
eemed wrong, but the next day, An-
mbella was sent for and given further
tests. Unexpectedly, then, she was cast
in the role as Napoleon's lover.

FEW actors could play a soialer-of-
fortune role as Conrad Veldt
plays It. He Is one of the greatest
European actors of the day. Frank
Wells, a son of H. G. Wells, designed
scenes for the Palace of Richelieu and
the castle of the Duke of Foix In the
south of France. Arthur Wlmperls
