Am extensive robbery of bonds has been
committed. The stolen ' documents are
valued at £2OOO, being the property of Mr
Samuel Plimsoll, formerly M.P. for Derby,
and well known for hie services on behalf of
the British merchant seamen. The thieves
have been captured.
The death is announced of Mr George
Groom Robertson, professor of mental
philosophy and logic at University College,
.London, in his 51st year.
Two thousand students have been deported
from Constantinople in vessels that have
sailed under secret orders. Nothing is
known as to the reason for the deportation.
Mr Charles Harding, who is well known
in Australia, has been engaged as first tenor
for the Ligas opera season, Loudon.
In consequence of the recent destruction by
fire of the Metropolitan Opera House, New
York, Madame Melba’s season, which was to
have opened on 30th November, has been
postponed until autumn nest year.
The railway station at Nancy, in France,
has been burnt. The damage is estimated at
200,000 francs.
An authoritative denial has been given to
the statement that H.R.H. the Rake of
Connaught is to succeed ' Lord Roberts as
commander-in-chief in India in the spring.
Tue Archbishop of Canterbury and many
of the bishops have opened a fund for the
purpose of purchasing .the site in Palestine
which the late General-Gordon considered
that he had identified as that of the sepulchre
where our Saviour was buried; '
Prince Henry, brother of the Grand Duke
of Hesse, has married Mademoiselle Herzie,
an Austrian vocalist.
In consequence -of the defeat and resig
nation of the Parker Ministry in Hawaii, a
new Ministry has been formed by Mr
MacFarlanc.
Mr Blewitt, a director of the London and
General Banking Company, Limited, which
suspended payment on 3rd September, was
found last night insensible and nearly dead
in Epping Forest, near London. It was
found that Mr Blewett had made a deter
mined attempt to commit suicide. He had
opened veins in his wrists in three places,
and had besides cut his throat. It is doubt
ful whether he will survive his injuries. His
condition is at present critical.
The owners of the docks at Liverpool are
conjointly about to undertake the construc
tion of an overhead electric railway for the
carriage of freight to and from the ship
ping at the docks. The line will be six miles
in length.
General Alexis Henri Briairaont, the
eminent Belgian military engineer and
writer on military subjects, who was for
some time Inspector-General of Fortifica
tions and of the Sappers and Miners in Bel
gium, has expressed the opinion that the
forts on the Dardanelles; the key of Con
stantinople, are absolutely worthless fur
military purposes. .
Captain Andrews has completed an ad
vent urous voyage across the Atlantic. He
travelled from Atlantic City, New Jersey,
U S., to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, in
a boat only 15 feet long. Ho was two months
on the voyage.
Mr Sage, a South Australian wine grower,
is now visiting the Bordeaux district in
France, with a view to acquiring informa
tion likely to bs of value to prodncers of
Australian claret.
The statement emanating from India, that
H.R.H. the Doke of Connanght will next
year succeed General Lord Roberts as com
mander-in-chief of the military forces in
India, is officially denied.
The Government of the Dominion of
Canada have entered into negotiation with
the Government of the colony of Newfound
land, with a view of arriving at a satisfac
tory settlement of the question of fishing
rights, and establishing more harmonious
relations between the two places with regard
to trade generally.
Mr G. VV. Anson, the! well-known' come
dian, who lately returned to England after
spending some years in Australia, has been
engaged to appear in “ A Lucky Dog” at
Terry’s Theatre on the 3rd October.
