At the animal show of the National Chry-
Banthemum Society to-day, some blooms
preserved in blocks office, sent by Mr’ J.
Earland, of Wellington, were exhibited. A
silver medal was awarded for the collection.
The Z ’slander and Tnrawera blooms were
awarded first-class certificates, and the Lady
Bell and Rimutaka blooms were highly com
mended by the floral committee. The public
is greatly pleased with the fine quality of the
blooms.
The Republican party have succeeded in
electing the Governor of Vermont, but by
a majority considerably less than on the last
occasion. A Democratic Governor of Ar
kansas has been again elected, and by an
increased majority.
The Marquis of Ripen, the Secretary of
State for the Colonies, has recommended
Her Majesty' to confer a knighthood upon
Dr Arthur Renwick, M.L C.', the New
South Wales Commissioner for the Chicago
Exhibition. Dr Renwick will- remain in
London for some time, in order to avoid
being placed in quarantine at New York, in
accordance with the recent stringent regu
lations adopted in consequence of the cholera
epidemic.
At the annual congress of Orientalists,
papers were read- by S'r Arthur Gordon,
formerly Governor of F-ji and- of New
Zealand, on the poetry of F'ji, and by Mr
Gladstone oh the phce dcian elements in the
Homeric palms.
It is rumored that Sir Frederick Broome,
formerly Governor of Western Australia,
and Governor of Trinidad since ilSWris'dU
ioclined to remain any longer in that colony,
which he does not like, and that he is
anxious tn succeed Sir Robert Hamilton as
Governor of Tasmania.-
The movement recently started with the
object of bringing Newfoundland into the
Canadian Dominion has been brought up
in the Parliament of Newfoundland. The
scheme is favorably regarded, and there
seems to be a likelihood of its being
adopted.
The latest information relative to the pro
gress of f’e punitive operations now being
carried on by the French Government
against King Behanzia, of Dahomey, is to
the effect that the native forces have been
overpowered, and that the king has offered
submission to the French.
The rebellion which has been in progress
intermittently in Yemen, one of the provinces
of Arabia, during the past 12 months, with
a view to enforcing the popular demand for
a reduction of taxes, is said to have notv
finally terminated. The rebel party, which
was stated to be some 40,000 strong, and
which for several months successfully defied
all attempts to subjugate them, are stated
to have been now pacified.
Intelligence from South America states
that a secret alliance has been made be
tween the three republics of Peru, Bolivia,
and the Argentine Confederation. _ The
terms of the treaty are not known, but
their suspected tendency is such that Chili
and Brazil, which both border on the three
allied States, are forming a defensive alli
ance.
