[?] AFFAIRS.
TO THE EDITOR.
—Yours, &c.,
[?]
SIR,—Seldom do 1 venture a line to the press, but
the letter in your issue of the 19th inst., signed “The
Gunner," has supplied so much intellectual food that
I could not refrain from complimenting the water
upon the comprehensive grasp he evidently has of
the true state of matters, and for the lucid manner in
which he has cut to shreds the groundless assertions
of the very few* enemies of Hr Smith. I have observed
for several years past that Mr Smith or family are not
allowed to make the slightest move towards advance
ment without being attacked with a tirade of abuse
and misrepresentation by a clique who, like Ur
Macawber, arc 11 waiting for something to
turn up.” It is said there is honor amongst
thieves, but 1 believe that should one of
them succeed in “jumping a billet,’* the
others would turn round at once, and the
howl-would be, “Gall for tenders for all the officers
every six roonthV* I have for many years taken an
interest in municipal matters in various parts of the
colony, and 1 hare always been. able to speak with
pride of the good business tact displayed by the
council of Grenvilleshire. If it still wishes to en
courage honesty and truth/ I would strongly advise
that cheap work and cheap officers be not considered
the primary objects of the council.-
