2fews. has been received in Adelaide of
the.deatth from wounds on April 11 of
Surgeon-Gapt. N".-C. Shieriaw, aged 33,
who3e receipt of the Military C-roas -was
announced last • month. He was a son
of Mr. J. C. Shieriaw, of Eton street,
Malvern. After he left Prince Alfred College
he went through the medical course
at the "Adelaide University. He then proceeded
to Edinburgh, and in 1909 took the
L.R.C.P. degree. He became resident
house surgeon at Maidstone Ophthalmic
Hospital, where he remained for IS
Inonths. In 1912 he was admitted a Fel
of
• Roy* 1 college of surgeons a
Edinburgh. He returned to Adelaide after
an absence of between four and five years.
He had been in practiee in his native city
'
as an eye specialist for about 12 months
:
when the war broke out, and he volunteered
for active service. ' He was medical
officer at a German internment camp until
the camp was broken up, when at his own
request lie was sent abroad. After about
nine months at Woodcote Park he was
transferred to France, and had been at the
front on. field .service for about -12- months
at/the- iime-o£ his- deaths?-In-.September,
1916, he received" frotn Major-Gen.- Sir
H- V. Cos (commanding. the ,4th Aus-
tralian Division) a card congratulating him
"his :courafte awi devotion to duty
near Pozieres on August 29-30, 1916."
AncCher brother, Mr. A. E. Shieriaw, of
Sydney, is a sergeant in the artillery.
Information was received iast week by
Mr. and MW. James Pike, of Prospect
Hill, near Meadows, that their erieond
son, Pte. Clarence James Pike, was killed
in action in France on March 26, 1917. He
enlisted in April, 1916, and left here to
wards the end of August, with the 20th
Reinforcements of' the 10th Batts-lion.
Born at Proepoct Hill on December 6,
1890, he was educated at the local St :tc
school. He became an active and earnest
of tne Methodist Sunday School,
and also of the Christian lender vour!
Prior to enlisting be was in the
of the Government Irrig. tion Department
in charge of the lim;bar;iing at
Ben'i, and subsequently at Waikerie and
get en-o it-Murray. He entered the service
of the department in April. 1912. and

brother, of the deceased, Pte. \V. L. Pike,
