Precautions at Port Pirie.
; ; PORT PIRIE, September 17.
The members of the crew of the Wakefie.d,
having, refused to be vaccinated, are
now noi allowed .on shore, and the gangway
is being guarded by the police, to see that
rone o: them--leaves the vessel. The
steamer, which came here from Auckland
iva . .erocastle, berthed at the wharf on
Thursday last. She had a clean bill of
health, but coming from an infected port,
Dr. Lieitch, the local quarantine officer,
ordered that the crew should be vaccinated.
It -is understood that all of the latter refused,
as well as the captain's wife and
daughter, wbo are -on board. Consequently,
the police were informed, and last
evening a constable was put on guard to see
that none came ashore excepting the captain,
who was vaccinated in New Zealand.
After leaving Auckland the steamer put in
at Newcastle for 24 hours. The captain
corcpiaihs of the" detention of those on
board, " who,""he points out, had -been on
shore often chough 'before, and have previously
mixed with the people here. The
wharf men are still engaged in the work of
trimming in the ship's hold, and are permitted
to go on and off.
