BALLARAT
An order by consent was given ln
the Ballarat County Court . on Tues
day by Judge Richardson for a reduc
tion of the net annual value from
£153 to £123 in the case in which
James Leslie Sim appealed against the
municipal valuation of Sim's timber
yard and cottaee adjoining, in Humf-
fray-street south.
Arranged by Ballarat -Council of
Churches, the first of weekly services
of intercession at the city hall and
open to all citizens was held'on Tues
day. Mr. A. E. Ewlns- (president of
the. council) presided, and prayers
and readings were given by Rev. F.
A. Forward and Rev. W. Kelly. Other
clergy will take up the leadership each
Tuesday.
Sustenance figures In Ballarat have
reached their lowest total, 484, for
some years, xne reauction is ascribed
by the authorities to enlistments of
men, and the absorption of others in
to work, mainly associated with in
dustries engaged in war work. For the
first week ln'June the cost to the Go
vernment was £862 1/6 and for the
last week of the month £792 12/4.
SENTENCED FOR SHOPBREAKING.
A plea of guilty was made ln Bal
larat General Sessions before Judge
Richardson on Tuesday by' Henry
Christian Koch, 19 years, metal, pol
isher, of Belgravia-street, Burnley, and
George Congdon, 16 years, Tinning-
street, Brunswick, to breaking into the
snop oi w. u. Mauueson, uayiesiord.
on June 14, and stealing tobacco and
money. Koch, who admitted three
prior convictions, was ordered to be
detained in a reformatory prison dur
ing the Governor's pleasure., Cong
don, it was stated, was concerned in
other proceedings ln Melbourne, and he
was remanded there for sentence.
