| BRIGHTON GRAMMAR
I SCHOOL.
A very large number of parents, relatives
jjuid friends assembled in the Wilson Hall
| Brighton, last night on the occasion of the
jannual distribution of . prizes in connection
with the Brighton Grammar School
Licutenant-'Goneral Sir H. G. ChauveL
G.C.M.G., K.C.B., presided. Addressing
the gathering, ho stated that the 6chool
waa founded in 1SS2 by Dr. Crowther, and
was carried on by him until he died, in
1918. IIo was succeeded by his eon, upon
his return from the war. It was only "a
small school, but its scholastic and sport
record was excellent. No fewer than 320
old boys went to the war, and they served
in capacities from private to general
These men had served in almost every im
portant 'Action in which the Australian
troops -had been engaged. This was a very
singular record. (Applause.) He impressed
upon the scholars that they should make
the mo9t of their time at school, both in
their work und their sport, for tliia time
would never come again. It , waa no use
them thinking that they . could make up
for lost time .later on.
The 39th annual report, presented by
the head master (Mr. IT. A. Crowther,
MrA.), showed that the number ot
scholars, both in/ the upper and lowci
schools,- had Been considerably augmented,
and the year closed with a record attend
ance of boys. (Applause.) He had bqen
approached with regard to the opening of
a kindergarten adjunct to the school, but
the accommodation and the facilities were
not available. iHirthcr, ho was not in
favor of the scheme, ' as public schools,
grammar schools and State schools were
not the places for boys of live arid six
years of age, who were better off men-
tullj, moiallj and. physically in schools
which catered specially for them. -The
school bad gained satisfactory results in
both the intermediate and leaving exami
nations of the University, and in addition
tin cc boys had passed the examination of
the Trimly College of Music. London.
(Applause.) In sport the school had been
very successful, and m the associated gram
mar school competitions had broken thrco
records, and had won " J ho Age"' and "The
Leader' Cup. (Applause.) On behalf of
tnc school he thanked tho donore for the
venous prizes, and all those persons who
had assisted the school in various-ways by
work and: interest. -Prize list:—
