At tho meeting of tlie Warruambool
Harbor Board on Tuesday Mr. Kcrmode,
chief engineer of ports and liailhorB, at
tended nnd replied to some criticism re
garding the withdrawal of the dredge Pio
neer from tlie buy recently. He snid it
had been the custom to leave the ilrcdgq
at Warrnambool for eight months of tlio
year, and the rest of the timo it was
put in dock or dredging tho West Channel,
Port Phillip. He pointed out that the
cost of dredging wns now a charge against
maintenance, and t'lioy couhl not expect as
sistance from tho Government except for
constructional work. The coat of dredging
last year was £0500, and the' port revenue
was £2510. Members of the board said
there would be a general outcry among the
ratepayers of the hnrboil area when it be
came known that the rates wore to be used,
for maintenance and not for developmen
tal work. It was decided to send a depu
tation to the Minister of Public Works in
regard to assistance for dredging nnd plac
ing the port in its normal condition; also
to the Treasu'cr lVignrding a loan under
tlie migration financial agreement.
Mr. W. Robinson was on Tuesday elected
unopposed to the vacancy in the Albert
ward of tlie City Council, caused by the
death of Cr. Stevens.
At tho fuinl meeting of tlie Western Dis
trict Football League tho financial state
ment showed tlie receipts to liav.i been
£3501, mid the expenditure £275'1,_ leaving
a credit balance of £748. Dividends
amounting to £110 each lmd been paid the
four clubs in the eastern section, and £30
each to five clubs in tlio western seotion.
A dividend of £75 to each club wns de
clared, and £03 was carried forward to
next season.
