QUEENSLAND WOMAN'S CLAIM
FOR MAINTENANCE.
The unhappy position in -which a Queens
land woman wns placed by the desertion
of her husband was told at Richmond
court yesterday, when Alary Josephine
I'arrell claimed maintenance for one of her
children from hot- husband, John Fancli,
painter.

during winch she received absolutely noth
ing. .She obtained a magisterial order
requiring plaintiff to pay -15/ weekly as
mamtcnancu for herself. The payments
in respect to this order were uow £38 in
arrears. Being unable to provide Bupport
herself fur all the children she was forced
to hand over three of them to tho care
of a State institution. Tho military
authorities in Queensland made over to her
n pension which her absent husband had
been drawing. Tahing her remaining child
with her she then travelled by boat around
tn \ ictoria, bnvnig heard that her bus-
band had lelt Tasmania for this State.
Complainant, in her evidence, added
that defendant had told her lie was going
to visit Ins mother in Inamania when
lie left Queensland. It was -nearly a year
ince she hnd seen him. On arrival m
Alclbournc she hnd ascertained that her
husband was living m Rowcna-parado.
Richmond-. She and her child hnd watched
him on different occasions taking another
woman out to entertainments.
Defendant said that as a, painter lie was
paid at the rate of 19/4 a day. He had
left, his wife because she had continually
abused bim, telling bun ho had bolter
clear out, as he was only a nuisance. He
wns willing to take tlie child in -respect to
which he. was now sued, and to support
it himself.
Air. Hoare: You say that now. Yet you
lot the Government pay for tho main
tenance of your other three children.
Air. Conlon, P.AI.: Defendant has acted
in a cowardly manner in having deserted
his family in. this way.
An order was. made for the payment of
15/ for the support of the child, a surety
of £25 to be found forthwith, in default
three months' imprisonment.
