TO CONTACT
PRISONERS
Correspondent
in China
"The Age" Special Correspondent
in Chungking
Reports reaching Chungking
in the past 24 hours, reveal
that many Australians are in
prisoner of war camps through-
out China. There are 44 in
Mukden camps and a consider-
able number at Weishen. The
largest batch is at Shanghai.
The Americans have flown
parties into these camps and
reports indicate that those pri-
soners seen arc in better shape
than had been expected. It is
believed that among the Aus-
tralian prisoners arc members
of the Eighth Division.
I am to proceed to Shanghai
to-day (Monday) to endeavor
to contact the Australians
there. Later I will fly to other
camps and try to compile a
complete register of prisoners.
United Stales head quarters
says that large numbers of pri-
soners and internees can be re-
leased only after Allied forces
have occupied the camps, to
which they will move by sea
and air.
