THE DEAN CONSPIRACY CASE.
SYDNEY Monday.
(R EUTER'S TELEGRAMS.)
The trial of Messrs Dean, Crick, Meagher,
Green, and Reynolds for conspiring to pervert
the course of justice was commenced to day.
All the accused pleaded “Not guilty”
Doan’s counsel raised a plea of pardon m
bar. but Acting Justice Cohen, wbo presided,
overruled it Mr Crick’s counsel demurred
to the-, indictment on tho ground that
the accused should bo supplied with full
particulars of tbo matters on winch they were
charged The judge overruled the demurrer.
The Crown challenged 14 juror*, and each
accused eight Mr C. 6 Hoydon, the
Crown prosecutor, opened the ca'O at great
length, reviewing the whole circumstances.
Formal evidence was called, and depositions
at pravions trials put in John Norton
said after accused was committed for trial
Meagher told witness that Crick was aware
of Dsan’s guilt Meagher said ho had become
doubly trapped, and that Crick had told him
(Meagher) that ho noarlv decided to blow his
brains out, adding ‘Wo shall beth be sent
no ’ Meagher told witness that Crick laid
“ You get mo out of it, and I will deal fairly
with you in partnership accounts ” Meagher
told witness Crick know of Do in’s guilt before
hs agitated for a Koval Commission. Meagher
also said his confession was obtained by Crick
by a rune. The case was adjourned until to
morrow.
