During 1896 7 1496 horses will be pur
chased by the Indian Army Remount De
partment. The purchases will be made at
the following places : Calcutta, 545;
Madras, 303; Bombay, 235. Horses must
be within the prescribed age —4 to 6 years—
and in the case of Australian horses 14 3 to
16 hands high The average price for an
Australian or Cape remount has been fixed
at £45 sterling.
The redoc ion of the land and Income tax
exemption agreed upon by the conference in
New Sonth Wales means a considerable
increase in revenue. With an exemption of
£475 in the land tax the Premier estimated
that receipts would amount to £400,000,
and with an exemption of £3OO in income
tax its receipts wore estimated lo amount to
£lOB 000, making £508,000 in all for direct
taxation. Now, under the exemption nf
£240 in land tax, the revenue from this
source will be £440,000, and under an ex
emption of only £2OO in income tax it is ex
pected to return £l5O 000—total for direct
taxation nf £590,000 This is an increase
of £82,000 upon the estimate of the Premier-
