THE LIBERAL "SPLIT."
Ministers Denied a Hearing.
LONDON, 7th May.
Six hundred delegates attended a confer
ence of the National Liberal Federation at
Leamington to-day. Great excitement
prevailed in view of- the break between the
two wings of the Liberal party. The Attor
ney-General (Sir Gordon Hewart), Dr.
Addison,' Mr. F. G. Kellaway, Mr. T. J.
Macnamara, Mr. C. A. M'Curdy and Sir
William Sutherland, who represented' tho
Coalition Ministers, were greeted with
boo-hooing on entering the hall. Imme
diately it was evident the Asquithian
Liberals had an overwhelming majority in
the federation.
, The executive submitted a resolution- de
clining Mr. Lloyd George's invitation to
support the fusion, declaring the continua
tion of the coalition was calculated to
mislead the electors.
Sir George Lun, who presided, said
there was no hope of Mr. Lloyd George re
turning to the Liberal fold. Jonah would
not swallow the whale— the whale, as usual,
had swallowed Jonah.
The disorder was continuous when mem
bers of the Coalition spoke. Dr. Addison
was interrupted, again, and again. Mr.
Macnamara, who delivered a fighting
speech, was continually boo-hoocd, while
when Mr. Kellaway was speaking a scene
of pandemonium prevailed, culminating in
Mr. Kellaway saying be "preferred the
company of his present associates to some
of those who took refuge in the tabernacle
in order to assassinate Sir Henry Campbell-
Banuerman."
There were erics of "Liar !" and the up
roar waa so great that the Attorney-Gene
ral led the Coalitionists from the hall. Thay"1
held a protest meeting on the steps of the
town hall.
The executive's 'resolution was carried
unanimously.
