CANADA AND AMERICA.
THE NEW RELATIONSHIP.
LONDON, llth Slav.
In further explanation in the House of
Gommous of the Appointment by the Cana
dian Government of a Minister to Wash
ington, Mr. Bonor Law said the new ar-
rangement would not denote any departure
either by the British or tbe Canadian 'Go
vernment from the principle of diplomatic
umty of the British Empire.- Tlie need for
this important step had been realised by
those Governments for some time. There
hnd been direct communication between
Washington and Ottowa for some years,
but tbc constantly increasing importance
of Canadian interests in the United States
made dt apparent that Canada should be re
presented there distinctively. Doubtless it
would tend to expedite negotiations, and
firsthand acquaintance with Canadian con
ditions would naturally promote a good
understanding. In view of the peculiarly
close relations which had always existed
between the peoples of Cauada and the
United States, it was also confidently ex
pected that the new step would have very
desirable results in maintaining and streng
thening friendly relations and co-operation
between the Empire and the United
States.
