SEARCH FOR STOLEN SHEEP.
MIXBOURNE. September 8.
Weaiherbeaien, and with tbeir boots almost
worn through by more than a month's
tramp across the wolds of the "Ninety-mile |
Desert," Constable C. Thompson, two black 1
trackers—Jerry and Tommy, from Dandenong—and
Jlr. J. McMillan, of the Broughton
Station, returned to Melbourne yesteTday.
They had --- been out since - July - - 16 --
searching for 5,000 sheep stolen from Mr.
McMillan's station, and although they
found the trail and followed it for about 500
miles on foot, the police authorities in Mel- j
bourne considered it advisable that the]
party should return before the sheep and
tie stealers were located. Constable
Thompson, with the trackers, returned to
Dandenong on Saturday etfenimr. Talking
of his experiences, the officer said they I
were greatly hampered in their work by
the lack of provisions, and at one time they
got as low as tbeir last bit of flour for damper.
During the search through tbe desert
Constable Thompson lost nearly a stone in j
weigbt. The black trackers, who were described
as "plump" and fit at the start,
returned very thin.
