FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR JAS.
BUTLER.
CRESWICK. Friday.

There wan a very large gathering of friends and
sympathisers to-day at the funeral of the late Mr Jas,
Butler, a well-known and popular young resident of
Waubra, who died at his parents' residence, Napier
street, Creswick, on Wednesday, whence he was
brnu/ht from Charlton on Monday last, The deceased
young gentleman h .and been suffering from an affection
of the lungs, and the visit up-country was made in
the hope that the warmer climate would prove bene
ficial to his health. Unfortunately the hopes of his
young wife and his parents and friends were not
realised, and an endeavor was wade to t**ke him to
his home at Waubra. On th»* journey from Charlton
to Creswiok lie improved somewhat, hut bis con
dition subsequently became such that it was
not considered wise to attempt the further dis
tance to Waubra. The family.are widely known
and, highly esteemed, and the f Bid event evoked
general expressions of sympathy from all sections of
the community. Hon. a, J. Peacock, M.L.A., the
Chief Secretary, telegraphed his condolence with the
bereaved relatives; and many beautiful floral tributes
were sent for placing upon the coffin. Shortly after
lOiO’clock a.ra. the cortege moved from Napier street,
the hearse being drawn by four horses, with plumes,
&C, Three mourning coaches followed, as . well as
many vehicles containing leading residents of t»pring.

Ballarat, Ascot, Learmonth, Addington, Springs and
Waubra residents joined In the procession until it muß
have reached nearly a mile in length At the grave,
which W4R reached at about 3 p.m., the Rev. Father
Meade, of Creswick, conducted the last 9 and rites,
being assisted by the local priest, Messrs Pasco and
Sob were the undertakers.
