Threatened Stoppage of
State Grant.
Trustees of tlic Working Mcii'g College
are seriously perturbed at the threat of
'the State Treasurer to withhold the State
annual grant of £-10,000 unless the college
joints the insurance pool' created by the
State - for covering the other similar in-
: stitutions in the State. Eor sonic ' weeks
the trustees have been endeavoring to
meet the wishes of the Government, hut
apparently the extent to which thy are
prepared to go is not acceptable to the
Treasurer;- What wns regarded as an
ultimatum was delivered to them yester
day by the State authorities, fho propose
to stop the college grant unless the build
ings were brought into tho pool. The
official letter explained that on'y the
Working' Men's and Swinburne colleges of
all tho technical schools in the State re-
. niaincd outside the pool, and tho Govern
ment desired that they should come into
it. i
Tlfo pool was evented by tho Govern
ment for technical school buildings with
the object of saving school fouueiis ap
preciable amounts in their insurance with
outside coinpanies. I n tho ease of the
Working .Men's College, the State authori
ties maintain that by joining' the pool the
trustees would Eave between £80 and
£100 a- year, compared with ins.iranco of-
lected "outside," in. addition to a fee ol
£10 10/, wliicli.tlie trusttees pay annually
to an insurance expert lor advice.. The
Government has demanded that this pay-
incnt-Bbould cease. To enforce its de
mands the Government recently slopped
the premium for the .pool from the col
lege grant,, but tiie trustees took exception
to this procedure. The threatened stoji-
pagc of the grant is the Government's
reply to that protest. The trustees have
also doc'iiicd to meet tho Government's
demands that it should retain the policy,
the trustees desiring that they should hold
it. hut the Government is pressing this
because it holds tho policies for other in
stitutions.
In view of the threatened stoppage of
the grant, the trustees will probably seek
an interview with the Treasurer to dis
cuss, .the position with him.
