HORSE TRANSPORT IN DISTRESS,

When the vessel was boarded she presented
sn exfcraordinary spectacle. The
imlwaiis wer® stove in and horse boxes
and cargo piled up promiscuously aft
over the decks, with some two hundred
dead and dying horses.
The vessel left Melbourne on October
11 for Durban with remounts, and encountered
extremely heavy weather
about 100 miles south of Cape Borda
on tJbe 13th.
A tremendous sea was running and
she was compelled to lay to for five
hours.
At 2.30 in the afternoon the main
crank shaft, carried away and the
steamer was lying helpless.
The horses were dreadfully knocked
about and were frantic with terror. •
Fortunately at 4.40 in the morning
the steamer Kadina was sighted and
whn who signalled tW that she would stand Ktt by c
ntil the weather moderated.

At that time the gale was terrific, m

nd the stock were suffering terribly, i

cross the ship and the animals either
going overboard or down the hold.
The seas were running right over the
steamer. She had her hatches stove rn
and the leg bulwarks smashed, the massive
iron beams carrying everything
loose in all. directions. It was extraordinary
that no human lives were lost.
On the 15th three hawsers were connected
with the Kadina; but £hey parted
On the 16th another connection was
made, with a like result.
Eventually the engineers disconnected
the broken engine and fitted it so that
it could work on a low pressure, and
managed to jig along at about threo
knots an hour, arriving safely at the
Semaphore anchorage.
