Yesterday’s P, Q\ News says:—“The returns
from the second crushing from the new. reef of
the Pleasmt Creek Cross Reef Company, came
to band yesterday, and ward as follows:—6s.
tons yielded 70 oz 18 dwt 12 gr, or an average
of 1 cz 1 dwt 19 gr per ton. On Tuesday
night last the men at work driving for the reef
:; pierced in the Nos. 1 and 2 Scotchmans by the
-diamond drill, :Btrhck the-atone; and shortly
afterwards exposed a considerable portion of
; the lode, It is thought likely; from? the ap
pearance of the reef, that the shaft of .the Nos,.
2 to 5 U being. put -„dowa alongside of it, and
that it could”ba reached by a drive. - -The ree£-
ii said to be .vertical. .1. ■- '
- The Talbot Leader «aye :—‘.‘ Mr J. Sharpe,
of B-dl«rat,'the' yvalhkhown -minetmanager,
deputed by a'cnmpaaj pf.Ballarat speculator?,
inspected the Prince of WalcslUef, pa . Tues
day, with a viewof-• forming accompany*to
worObe exleotiTe.quartz lodes it- cootains.
Mr Sharpe was accompanied-in his' inspection
by Mr Carnegie j the .manager of the Union
Quartz Company, Amherst, and both gentle
men were, we understand, vary favourably
impressed with the resf, as likely to prove a
permanent gold-bearing lode. Somo samples of
stone obtained were taken to Ballarat for in*
specthm by the syndicate, and Mr Carnegie i
will furnish a report, in duo course on the
nature of the reef and prospects of working it.
The reef has been proved to. be gold-bearing
by the companies which have worked it la the
Prince of Wales and Talbot Quartz Companies,
proving beyond a doubt that a very large and
•well-paying reef exists, capable of affording a
return for capital invested, and engaging profit
able labonrfor a longtime. Wo understand
that-if the reports are favourable, some ex
tensiyeVperatious are .contemplated, and that
tbs reef will be thoroughly tested In the most
recent and approved manner, and by the belt
machinery and plant, which will be erected.!*
New of gold from 136 tons,
142 oz 12 and wt. Took advantage of the battery
stopping-to put new connecting rod in saud'
pump, and it works admirably. . Since tbs
contractors gave up their contract have had the
etopes cleaned down and filled up, and laid
•sollars preparatory to a fresh start with the new
contractor, who started bo Wednesday last.
The south drive baa been extended a further
distance of 8 feet 6 inches; stone widening,
and of a better character; it is now 4 feet wide,
but very hard; total, 158 feet 6 laches. The
north drive has been extended a further dis
tance of 9 feet; lode continues of the . same
streaky, nature, highly charged with minerals,
4 feet wide, andwithout any sign of foot wall;
total, 195 feet 6 inches. 1 The slopes south are
looking well, and ‘ about the usual width of
stone.. 1 have started to bale out the north
mnz?» and, shall keep the men in the rise
'stopipg back, as they can* break a quantity of
sto tie from tbescope we now have. Tenders
are called for extending north level, and also
for breaking 1000 tons of stone in the north
etopes. The tributors on the hill have about
27 loads out to crush, and are preparing to
sink on the shoot of gold, which can be seen
occasionally. ’.v. -
