PICTURE THEATRES.
HOY'T'S. '
Patrons of Hoyt'R theatres nt the matinee nnd
evening performanco on Saturday, witnessed a
well -diversified programme. Chief interest was
centred on n pictorial adaptation of the old
i slai try tale of the American cotton plantations,
Uncle Tom's Cahin The acting of the strong

wsa particularly good. Doug. Fairbanks in He
Comes Up Smiling provoked general merriment
by his diverting entire The film contained plenty
o adventures, fights with a gang of tramps, and
thrilling scenes. A new Sennitt comedy, Cupid's
Day Out; a Burton Holmes trard picture, and
English, American and Australian topical gazettes ,
made up an excellent programme.
MAJESTIC.
At botb the matinee and night performances
the Majestic was filled on Saturdiy. An adapta
tton of Oyothia Stockley's novel, '"Hie Clow,"
with Clara Kimball Young playing the leading
role, was screened as the star feature in the new
programme. The picture was intensely interest
ing, with its powerful scenes und the fine emo
tional acting of the leading players. In the
supporting drama Mrs. Charlie Chaplin headed
the ensfc in Oic new Lois YVeber production; Bor
rowed ClothcR, a picture of exceptional merit.
A comedy, the American gazette und the Pathe
review concluded an interesting programme.
PARAMOUNT.
With a capital pictorial programme, interspersed
with nelectinns by reUr Dawson, the entertain
ment provided at the Paramount on Suturriuy
proved highly acceptable to the large audience,
'j he Kingdom of Youth, starring Madge Kennedy
and Tom Moore, and a Successful Adventure,
t tarring Mae Allison, abounded in those situa
tions in which the patrons of the pictures de
light. To-day there will be a complete change
of programme. Peter Dawson will sing new items
at the afternoon and evening performances, while
the star pictorial feature will be Jnhnnyonthe
Spot, featuring Hale Hamilton, "ggy llybtnd,
the beautiful Englisn actress, beads the cast in
the fupporting film, Bonnie Annie Laurie. Topi-
nil, comedy and travel pictures combine to com
nlcte a programme of outstanding merit..
: auditorium.
Starting on Saturday, the continuous syetem
of presenting picture programmes was adopted at
the Auditorium.- and Judging by the crowded
house the venture should prove a success. The
star feature was the Paramount Artcraft drama,
Don't Change Your Husband, a play reflecting
married life in all its phases, with Gloria Swan
eon and Elliott' Dexter at the head of the
iplayera. Supporting this feature was the five
part World film, The Hand Invisible, with Mon
tague Love playing the lead. The third episode
in the Eagle's Eye educational, travel and topical
pictures were included in the programme Addi
tional interest was 'given to the entertainment
by the appearance of Mr. Frank Charlton, a bari
tone, whose selections were appreciated.
STRAND.
A new departure is being followed by the man
agement of the Strand Picture Theatre, where
only the first section of the programme on Satur
day oonpistod of motion pictures, one of which waft

The latter portion of the entertainment was pro
vided bv the Scarlet Gaieties, nnd oonsisted of

A typical ""hit" at the police force was keeniv
enjoyed, as was also a scries of instrumental
items. Hie finale from Faust, in whiah the
whole company joined, provoked conaderable en
thufiiasin.
MELBA AND BRITANNIA.
Drama, comedy and a seasoning of touicul films
comprised the programmes at the Melba ana
Bri«»cnia theatre on Saturday. Commencing to
night, there will De a complete change of pro
gramme at both theatres. At the Melba the
star feature will be the Vagabond Pnnce, sup
ported by a Keystone comedy, Her Nature Dance;
while at the Britannia, Constance Talmadge will
play the leading role, in the principal picture,
