Two youths, named Sydney B. Bette-
lidge and Henry T. Denton, yesterday
pleaded guilty. in thc Criminal Court to
ten charges of housebreaking. According
tn Detective Rohan, information given by
the accused at their arrest resulted in
some £700 worth of stolen property being
recovered, being the proceeds of 31 dif
ferent j cases of housebreaking in the
various suburbs. Altogether over £10011
v.orth of' goods bad been stolen, and be-
taween £500 aud £000 worth was got
buck from pawnshops, while over £100
worth had been given by the accused to
girls. Both accused asked for leniency,
and said they had been working for some
years in tlie mercantile marine, and had
good discharges from their ships.
-Mr. Justice Scliutt said tiie evidence
showed that accused had indulged in a
perfect orgy of housebreaking, and had
committed a scries of grave crimes. A
most serious feature also was that when
they were arrested each of the accused
was found to be carrying a loaded revol
ver. i The habit of carrying and using
firearms was getting far too prevalent, and
he must take that factor into considera
tion. Accused would each be sentenced to
nme mouths' imprisonment, with bard
labor, and at tlie expiration of that term
won hi be detained in a reformatory during
tiie Governor's pleasure.
