The Morwell Murder.
Another Whitelaw Corpse.
Memories of the Morwell murder of 30th
April, 1918, when Mrs. Maria Whitelaw
was shot, are recalled by the latest curious
development reported to the Criminal Inves
tigation branch on Saturday. The Morwell
police notified that on Friday the skeleton
of a man had been found near the Haunted
Hills, some miles out of Morwell. Beside
the skeleton was a gun without a stock a
pair of boots and a bottle which had con
tained strychnine: Constable Willett, of
Morwell, the local doctor and several resi
dents are of the opinion that the skeleton
is that of Charles Whitelaw, husband of
the murdered woman, who disappeared im
mediately after the crime, and who has
been sought for by the police ever, since
The astounding feature of the case lies in
the fact that two months ago another body
which, at the time, was positively identified
by relatives as that of Whitelaw, was found
near Gembrook. Identification was estab
lished primarily in this instance by two
watches and other personal effects which
were found near the remains. So satisfied
were the authorities that the body of the
missing man Whitelaw had been dis
covered that permission was granted for
his burial in the same grave as the wife.
Now, with the latest developments, the
police are in a quandary. Before the mys
tery is finally solved they have to find out
definitely which is the body of Whitelaw.
