tice is elsewhere given that all rates must

The Minister of Lands is obtaining a
valuation of the estate of Mr. C. P.. Bow
man, of Ca-irnbrook, Bosedale, which has
been offered to the Govern nient for closer
settlement purposes. The estate, which is
near the Hey field property of the late Mr.
Tyson, has. an area of about 800 acres, half
of which is river flats. The soil is said to
be/admirably adapted for either dairying
or! mixed farming. This makes the fourth
estate which has been submitted to the
Government for purchase under the closer
settlement legislation. There arc,, how-
' over, thirteen allotments of a total area of
199L acres, of the Whitfield Estate still
unsold, representing a money value of
£16,300. The difficulty of disposing of
the Whitfield land, for which the State
appears to have given too high a price,
is having a discouraging effect upon the
Minister of Lands in carrying out the
closer settlement policy.
