ORIGINAL POETRY.
THE BOGONG ELECTION.
Our member's gone— to all electors dear ;
For now he's lifted to a higher sphere,
Where he his brilliant talents can display,
Ann show the outline of a coming day.
Now he's gone, someone must take his
iilace,
And let us hope he'll follow in his trace.
tx..„ ..onritVlates have - entered for the
JJIVU - ,
-stake,
And each one strives a: lively pace to
make.
So, as butone can win, let's hope the best
Will give the unwelcome congd to the
rest.
Men of undoubted talents sometimes trade
Upon those talents, making .a parade
Of gifts that are to them by nature given,
Asif those gifts were nob endowed by
Heaven.
Now see them off, the race has now begun,
The pace a cracker, very keenly fun.
First A. A B. appeal's, a favorite hot ;
But still it surely will nob be forgot
Rot always 'tis the swift that wins the
race —
Outsiders often gain the foremost place.
Iu him who rules, with autocratic rule
The students who attend his well trained
sciiool
A formidable rival may arise,
And gain, perchance, the eager longed-for
prize.
But let us not prejudge : the poll wiU
show
To whom the electors wish their votes to
20.
Come forth, T.M., once ;more yo.ur views
propound,
And spread them wide o'er all the elec
torate ground,
And let the electors find, as heretofore,
That fearless honor welcomes you once
more.
As tickle fortune favors, oft the brave,
Some luck may come this time the seat to
save
For you, where you can prove your ster-
' ling worth ;
So lose no time, but gallantly come forth.
Now on the scene an untried' man "ap
pears : ... :
Buoyed up with hope, casting aside all
fears, '
He makes his bow, and tries his' level. best
To be the first and leave behind the rest.
He strives to win, with good" men at his
1 1.
uaviv,
And be a credit to himself and Yack. '
And now comes John, well known to all
arouud, ;
In whom all truth and honesty are found.
Long years as councillor he proved his
worth,
To many a local benefit gave birth.;
His popularity has never waned, , :
But always more and more esteem has
gaiued.
If sometimes to his views some might
object,
They never failed to show him deep re
spect ;
His worth shone out in all he did or said,
To meet his foes he never was afraid.
True to his conscientious vieys, he tried
Iu the right coarse his fellow-men to
guide; ...
Courteous to aU, e'en . tho' his efforts
failed,
Be never faltered tho' his foes assailed ;
Ao one who knew him could a wrong
word, say,
His heart and soul were open as the .day.
So at the finish let us hope. to cry, .
Our John's the first to catch the judge's
eye.
Then roll up, boys ! record your vote for
one, ,
And let that vote recorded be for John.
ELECTOR.
