Mining ax Tallandoon. — A crashing
of 50 tons from the 44 Never. Can Tell"
claim at Tallandoon was completed last
week, giving the very encouraging return
of' 102oz. 8dwts. 9grs., or an average of
over 2oz. to the ton, the product having
been purchased by the Beechworth branch
of the Bank of New South Wales on
Wednesday. The claim is owned by a
Beechworth syndicate of ten members,
and there is every prospect of a remuner
ative output for some years to come.
Football Protests. — At the ordinary
meeting of the Ovens and Murray As
sociation, held at Wangaratta on Wednes
day, several protests were considered and
dealt with. The protest by Excelsior
against Beechworth was dismissed ; whilst
those by Albury against Excelsior and
Rutherglen, for playiug ineligible men.
were upheld to a certain extent, both
matches having to be played over again.
Football. — The following team has
been chosen to represent Beechworth next
Saturday against Corowa, on the ground
of the latter Bidstrup, Byrne (capt).,
Billson, Blackham, Brown, Connell,
Fahey, Houston, Greer, Gordon, Lukins,
Milne, Sainsbury, Scott, Thompson,
Tozer, Williams and Wallace ; emergen
cies, Groves, Dwyer. Any player unable
to go is requested to notify the secretary
at once. The coach will leave the post-
office at 9 o'clock a.m. sharp.
Fire at Benalla.— On Tuesday night
there was a narrow escape from a -serious
confi igration at the residence of Mr.
Hall, dentist, Nunn-street, Benalla,
owing to an accident with a kerosene
lamp. Some of the oil got spilt on the
tablecloth and caught fire. Mr. Hamil
ton, Mr. Hall's assistant, on hearing the
alarm, rushed in, and managed fortunately
to put it out before any damage worth
speaking of was done.
Mrlbourne Sheep Market. — Fat
Sheep. — 64,800 yarded on Tuesday,
which consisted chiefly of second and
useful descriptions, with a fair sprinkling
of prime. The market opened with a
firmer demand, and prices gradually
hardened to improved quotations ; clos
ing sales, however, were weaker, when
prices receded to about late rates. Prime
crossbred wethers from 17s. 6d. to 19s.
3d. ; extra prime heavy do. do., from
20s. to 22s., few to 24s. ; good do. do.,
from 14b. 6d. to 16s. 9d. ; middling do.
do., from 12s. to 15s. ; prime- crossbred
ewes, trom xas. oa. co ids, yd. ; extra
prime and heavy do. do., from 16s. 9i. to
17s. 6d., few 21s. and 21a. 3d. ; good do.
do., from 12s. 6d. to 14s. ; middling do.
do., from 10s. to lis. 9d. inferior, from
7s. ; best merino wethers, from 16s. 6d.
to 17s. 6d. ; good do. do., from 13s. 6d.
to 15s. 3d. ; second and inferior, from 10s.
Fat Calves. — 3980 penned. There was a
steady demand, best descriptions ruling a
shade firmer, others at quotations. Prime
sold at from 10s. 9d. to 12s. 6d. ; extra,
from 13s. 9d. ; good, from 9s. 6d. to 10s.
6d. ; second, from7s. to 8s. 6d. ; inferior,
from 5s. 9d.
Rifle Shooting. — On Saturday. at the
Springhumt range, Mr. F. Schlue, who
was completing his musketry firing, scored
heavily, as the following will show 200
yds., 45 points : 300yds., 45 points : 400
yds., 47 points ; 500 yds., 41 points; total,
178 points, Mr. Schlneseored no less than
23 bulls.
