ALONG THE MURRAY.
Light Crops at Piangii.
PIANGIL, Sunday.— Harvesting opera
tions are now under way, and owing to
the very light crops and the shortage of.
feed most of the wheat is being taken off.
by strippers, many of which had been idle
for several years.. The straw is very short,
and the "cooky chaff" will assist in re
lieving the scarcity of chaff,. Hay -.crops
were practically a failure, only aT few
areas , apnrt from the irrigated paddocks
being cut. A number of farmers'v.sold
the growing crops for Bheep feed. '.'Very
few oats have been stripped, as the oat
crops did not hold out as well as the
wheat.
What is by far the best wheat yield in
the district ;is that of Sir. X. Hickoy, on
the Murray Kiver, who gave one watering
to a paddock which is estimated will yield
well over eight bags to the acre. In the
majority of cases, however, only about
sufficient .for seed" purposes will be.
stripped. It is anticipated that a very
small amount, if any, will be forwarded
to the seaboard, further north a large
percentage of settlers will have to rely on
Government relief for the provision of,
seed wheat foe the next season.
With 'a'-'Kight riVer right through the
spring, and a, large stream still liowing,
all available- pumps' bave been kept work
ing for irrigating the rich Murray, lints, in
order that summer feed may be grown.
The large areas of millet, amber cano and
Sudan grass are flourishing. Owing to
the light loading offoring and the keen
competition, of the railways, with motor
transport as feeders to the railways since
tlie opening of the now line to Balranald,
the river bents have made very few trips,
and it wduld-uppenr -tbat -this method of
transport lias . been definitely super
seded.-
The vine crops! 'herd -.have recovered, to
a largo extent from vtlic \frost damage, and
fair crops are expected.'
