ROWING.
KING'S CUP CREW. .
SELECTJON METHODS CRITICISED.
BALLARAT, V/cdnegdny.— ' The Milduva Rowing
Club lure written to the Ballurat Regatta .As
sociation seeking its interest hi the question of
selection of the Victorian crew for tho King's
Cup. Dissatisfaction is expressed with thn pre
sent method of selecting tho crow. Under the
existing system it. is claimed tliat the State is
not represented by its full rowing, strength, as
the selection for years past has been confined
to metropolitan crews. The suggestion is inade
that any combination of district; clubs or any
one individual club should be allowed to com-
peto in a test race to decide tho best crow in
Victoria, the suocesHful crew lo lu» allowed to
represent the Stale in tbe big nice, and to con
tinue' training on. its own water and under its
own coach. Expenses of visiting crews should
be paid by the V.K.A., the money being raised
by an increase of the capitation fee of all coun
try members.
There is every indication that the entry for
the four-oared championship, to be vowed on
Sutuiday, 17th instant, will lie a record for
this eVent— in fact, it jk possible the entry
will exceed the record of ten crews received
for the champion eights in 1920-21. season.
It is strange that for the past twelve rneefl
tor the four-oarcd olusnipionriiip the entry has
been, cither six or seven crews, in fnct for
nine successive yeare' the entry \yaa alternatively
six ana seven crews. The crews which arc
training at present are Melbourne, Richmond,
Banks, Bnllarut City, Da-won, AVendouree, Haw-
thorn. Albert I'utk, Essendou and Mercantile.
In addition to these crew, University will also
enter, if the club can secure -a racing boat
for. its crew. The Melbourne club has won this
event for tho past three years, and as tbe
crew was tbe same on each occasion, it equalled
the vc.cord of three .'uuc-emve wins put up by
C. AV. Horsburgh, J. Yc-ounnre, A. Chamlc.v and
E. R. Ainley, of tho Ynrm Yarrn. club nearly
30 years ago. This yu.r Melbourne has tbe
same crew, and is p-iiticularly anxious lo
establish a new record. The crew will be
opposed by a numbtv of crows comprised of
young cursmcn, and as iiu- Melbourne men lrnvc
not youth in their favor, it will bo a case
of ttkiU and experience versus youth. The
champions are confident tnat they will put up
na good a race as in the past, provided they
arc not handicapped by tiie draw for - posi
tions. It 'is inlenrUug to note the length
of lime which records for successive wins In
senior' 'events have stood good. As mentioned
before, tbe record which Melbourne has
equalled in the fours was put up in 'the years
3 890, 3S9) and 1S92. Tn the senior eights
Yarn Ynrni also put up n record of eight
Kiict'esstve wins mxtrly 20 years ago. In
1921, Mercantile got a erew together which
cqnalled Yarn Ynrm's record, but at the
ninth attempt the crew were defeated and
(hoy never won again. In Hie champion pairs,
C. Donald ami Hie late A. Chamley established
a record of three successive .wins in 3901,
1C02 and 1002. This was' equalled by R. Todd
and. J. Jopliug of Wendouree, but .when the
latter crew hoped to secure its fourth suc
cessive win, and thus establish a new record,
it finished nuplaced. This crew won in the
following two years, and has (he record of
the greatest number of wins in (be pair-unrcd
championship, but the succession was broken nt
the fourth attempt. Probably the record which
may lake most heating Is Hint of Percy Ivans,
formerly of (be Mercantile club, in Ihc cham
pion sculls. For seven years 111 succession Ivens
won this event, in the oigfilh vear he did not
blurt, but ptnrled again and won the following
year, thus securing eight; wins in eight starts
between , the years 10(11 and 3909.
If ' eleven crews enter for the championship
this year, ns seems possible, it is very doubt
ful if such a number can bo started abreast,
in ihc canal. When the ten eights started
in tho lower river there was very little room
between the crews, and the race had to he
stopped shortly after the start. At tho second
attempt there was also clashing, but tbe raeu
was not again stopped. F.ntries for the cham
pionship will close nl ft p.m. 011 Monday next.
Preston Rowing Club's annual combination
races will lie held nt Edwnrdrs Lake, Reservoir,
on Saturday nftfrnnnn.
