MIGRATION STATISTICS.
Arrivals and Departures.
Ten Months' Gain of 38,761.
Figures issued yesterday by the Com
monwealth Statistician show that during
the month of October 9755 persons arrived
in Australia, as compared with departures
numbering 4341 persons— au increase of
arrivals over departures of 5414. Arrivals
for the ten months ended 31st October
numbered 93,963 persons, and the re
corded departures 55,202, giving an excess
of ,38,701 arrivals, which was 4700 greater
tlinn that recorded for the corresponding
period of 1926. It was also appreciably
higher than that recorded in a 'correspond!
ing period of any of the past five years.
Of the total arrivals and recorded depar
tures during October 77 per cent, and 79
per cent, respectively were British white
people, and 20 per cent, and 11 per cent,
represented other Europeans. In October,
1926, British white persons represented
80 per cent, of the arrivals and recorded
departures, while other Europeans com
prised 17 per cent, and 9 per cent, respec
tively.
Permanent . new arrivals during the
month— 5085 persons (52 per cent.) — ex
ceeded the total Australian residents de
parting permanently by 4008 persons. The
permanent gain to the population for the
ten months ended 31st October was 38,736
pei-sons, as compared with an excess of all
arrivals over recorded departures of 38,761
persons. The corresponding results for
the ton months of 1920 were:— Permanent
gain, 34,049;- -and excess of all arrivals,
34,001. - .
