TOO MUCH ROUTINE.
Advocate of Shorter Hours.
LONDON, 2nd March.
Sir Oliver Lodge, speaking at Croydon,
said the people needed more leisure, edu
cation nnd free time. They ought not to
spend the whole day in routine work.
Mniiy industries worked three eight-hour
shifts. He asked' why not four or six
hour shifts ? That would employ more
people, nnd give more time for self-
development, for tile sake of which the
workers ought necessarily to accept lower
wages. He declared that at present they
were divided into two classes — the over
worked. and the unemployed.
