FIBROUS PLASTERERS'
UNION.
Attitude to Piece Work.
By stress of circumstances the Fibrous
Plasterers' Union lias been compelled to
abaudoD its policy, which lias boon in
vogue ever since the union was estab
lished. of insisting that only persons un-
der the age of 21 years and 0 mouths,
and those not engaged in piece work,
should he admitted ns members. In the
past six years three ballots have been
token on the question of admitting ns
members persons engaged on piece work,
and on each occasion it was defeated. He-
con tly. however, thc union lias decided
to admit piece workers, and a, proposal
will he made to rescind thc rule regarding
tho qualification of members. It was
stated that the object of such conserva
tive measures was to build up a power
ful organisation, nnd to confine the mem
bership to those who lind served appren
ticeship. or who laid obtained clearance
from other places. Unfnir competition
and price cutting among the employers
were said lo have compelled the union to
admit ns members all those employed in
the industry. It is probable that efforts
will ,bo made to have piece work rates
fixed under the wages board determina
tion.
