GAME KEENLY CONTESTED.
ADELAIDE, Monday — The Sheffield
Shield match between South Australia and
New South Wales , was resumed in fine
weather this morning. In reply to the
South Australian's first innings score of
500, New South Wales on Saturday lost
three wickets for. 203 runs. A sensational
over after lunch by Griinmett, who took
three wickets for no runs, closed the New
South Wales innings for 341. South Aus
tralia began tlioir . second innings ut 2.45
p.m. with a lead of 150 runs.
When play was resumed this morning
Andrews was 60 and Ratcliffe .7. After
half an hour's slow play, Williams dis
placed Scott, the New South Wales total
then being 222. Andrews was out to the
fourth ball of Williams's second over. He
hit a ball hard inside mid-off, and V.
Richardson ran across and took a wonder
ful catch close to the; ground. Andrews
had batted 143 minutes for 86, which in
cluded six 4's. The score was then 234, or
one short of. South Australia's total for
the fourth wicket.
. Ratcliffe," was joined- by Jackson! and
the scoring i-ato brightened, the 250 ap
pearing .in 224- minutes. , Ratcliffe appeared
to be set for a big score, but swinging
lustily at a- ball on the leg from . Williams,
it broke back, 'struck his pads/ and took
his wicket. Ratcliffe had batted 61 min
utes for 40 runs, and hit eight 4's. Two
wickets had fallen in .less than an hour.
Jackson hit Williams to mid-off, a simi
lar stroke to that off which Andrews was
caught, aiid V. Richardson took a nice
catch. _Six wickets were now down for
268. Williams, who started the day with
one wicket for 84, had improved his re
cord to the extent of four for 117. Mor
gan hit a full toss from Grimmett to the
boundary, bringing up 300 in 271 minutes.
At the lunch adjournment six wickets
were down for 312. ,
The first ball after lunch accounted for
Hogg, who stepped out to Williams, missed
the ball, and Parry stumped him. V.
Richardson took his third catch for' the
innings when he accepted a chance from
Mailoy off Grimmett at mid-off. . Grim
mett then bowled McQuirk with the next
ha", and the score was nine for 341.
McNamee spoiled Grimraett's "hat trick,"
although lie knew little about the four
balls that he ' received. McNamee was
then bowled, 110 runs having been scored
off the over. The innings, which closed
at -2.30,' had lasted 305- minutes, four wic
kets falling in the half - hour after lunch
for 20 runs.
South Australia's Second
1 Innings.
Schneider and A. Richardson opened
South Australia's second innings. One
run came for a leg-bye, and Richardson
was then caught behind the wicket off
McNamee's sixth, ball. Gun was ten
minutes before he scored, and then
Schneider was bowled by. McNamee, who
bad taken two wickets for 4 runs. Two
wickets were down within half an hour;
Gun was nearly run out, Hogg missing the
wicket when throwing in. < Gun hatted
with extreme - caution. The game
brightened a little, but at 41 V. Richardson
was out leg-before to Mailey.
Rymill was troubled by Mailey at first,
and then drove him for 4. Ivippax
dropped a hard ball from Rymill when
the batsman was 5.
Gun was given out leg-before wicket to
McNamee. He had played a lot.of balls
with his pads, and batted 64 minutes for
20 runs. At the tea adjournment four
wickets were'down for 58. McNamee had
bowled eleven good overs for 21 runs, and
secured three wickets.
After' tea Rymill was not seeing the
ball too well, out Alexander batten con
fidently. Rymill as he neared 20 did
hotter, mixing aggression with restraint.
Half an hour's play yielded only 17 runs.
Phillips was substituted for Mailey,. who
had bowled fourteen overs for 43 runs.
The century appeared in 127 minutes.
Risky singles were stolen by both bats
men, and the score was advanced slowly.
Rymill's 4 off Morgan wua the second in
an hour. Good fielding made the runs
hard to get. Rymill reached 50 in. 02
minutes, when he was caught behind off
Morgan, swinging at a leg ball. He hit
five 4 s.' "At 140 rritchard - stepped out
to Mailey and put South Australia 300
runs in front. Pritchard brought up 150
in 172 minutes with a couple of lusty pulls
to the square-leg boundary off Morgan.
Alexander got all his runs safely, and the
