THE MAORIES' QUARREL WITH
WALES.
LONDON, 4th October.
The reported breach between the
Afaories and the Rugby authorities iu
Wales regarding the Welsh tour is not
likely to result in the cancellation of 'the
matches. Air. Parata refuses to play
under Welsh rules, because he' is already
experiencing difficulty in France with the
interpretation of the rules by local re
ferees. He is unwilling to play under dif
ferent miles in different countries.
Air. Wray, the Maories' London repre
sentative, has telegraphed to the Welsh
Union suggesting that they should play
the Welsh games under the International
Board rules, recently adopted by tbe Eng
lish Union. Afr. Parata, it is pointed
out, is only following precedent in re
questing neutral referees. Afr. Wray
thinks matters will he settled amicably.
Air. Philip Trevor/writing in .the "Daily
Telegraph,", says:— "I always felt .the
.Welshmen were asking for trouble with
this ovdinancc. but it came sooner than
I expected. ' Nevertheless, was it not a
good rule, when in Rome to do as the
Romans do. I find it 'hard to believe the
Afaories objected to Welsh referees. The
Welsh union can be scarcely blamed if it
be inclined to regard the; objection as a
slur on the efficiency and impartiality of
Welsh referees. It is to he hoped that
tlid seemingly unnecessary trouble will bo
satisfactorily adjusted before the Afaories
arrive. Afaories on the warpath were an
interesting sight in the olden days. They
now belong to as. _ We want to see them
henceforward playing the game and not
fighting.".
