THE QEELOm AGRICULTURAL
SOCIETY'S SUOW.
from OUR own correspondent.)
The autumn exhibition of the society took
place yesterday, "at the Mechanics' Institute,
Geelong. The dhow, taken as a whole, was
well up to the average of former years, with
the exceptiou of grapes. In this class there
was a marked falling off, both in quality, and
quantity, as compared with previous shows.
Better wheat lias never been shown ; the
oats, barley and peas left nothing to be de
sired, the exhibits being numerous, and of
excellent quaUty. W. Humphreys took the
first, prizo for wheat, and also the prize for
the best collection of wheat; G. Henderson
following very closely, aiid also'taking the
first prize for Tartarian oats. W. Hum
phreys took first in dun and first in white
peas, as also in golden vetches, and second
in prairie grass. Joseph Cleary secured the
first prizo for oats of any variety. O. Madden
was first for tho English and Cape barley.
There was a large display of seeds. Messrs.
Levien and Son and Miles and Son dividing
the honors pretty equally. There was no
exhibit of colonial malt. The mangel wurt-
7.eh and beets, and, indeed, the entire
families of Toot9 and bulbs, were very well
represented, 32.. Hoptou took first for globs
aud second .for long red mangels, Miles
and Son taking first for long red and
second for globe. Tlie onions of Messrs.
King and Hon and the carrots of Mr.
W. c. Williams could hardly be excelled.
The show of apples and pears was the best
and largest eVer seen in Geelong ; nothing
could be finer of their kind. The exhibits
of butter, were meagre, and of cheese very
smnll. There was neither ham nor bacon
among the exhibits. The flowers were much
admired,', particularly the out dahlias,
ns .also some fuchsias of great
merit,' The. judges remarked that
Mr. Rnddenbury, curator of the Geelong
Botanical Gardens; exhibited a magnificent
stand of out Zinnias, also a large and hand
some collection of decorative plants, and
many rare' and highly effective ones. Mr.
John Noble exhibited splendid specimens of
elks1 horns, from tbe Kocky Mountains
of America.-. Mi3s Eveline Noble ex
hibited a specimen of illuminated
writing, displaying extraordinary merit.
The Barwon Woollen Mill sent some speci
mens of their tweeds and blankets, for both
of which the judges recommended the so
cietyYfirst silver medal. Upon the whole
the show was a decided success, although the
number of visitors was hardly what it should
have . been,'' considering the extremely fine
day. Mr. J. H. Connor, president of the
society, may be complimented upon tbe
manner in which he performed his multifari
ous duties, -as also the committee generally.
