INQUESTS.
Dr. Youl held an inquest yesterday at
the Old Lincoln Inn, Cardigan-street, Carl
ton, on the body of James Elton Rowley,
aged sixty years, late chief warder at the
Melbourne Gaol, who died rather suddenly
on Sunday morning at his private residence,
Carlton. The deceased always enjoyed good
health, and got up as usual on Sunday morn
ing, and partook of a good breakfast. He was
talking to a neighbor, smoking his pipe, and
had just returned to his back door, when he
fell suddenly down insensible. The deceased
had had nothing to excite him. Dr. Fletcher,
who made a post mortem examination on the
body, deposed the cause of death was apo
plexy from disease of the kidneys, and the
jury returned a verdict accordingly.
Another inquest was held by Dr. Youl
yesterday, at Melbourne, on the body of
Bridget Cousens, aged thirty years, who
drowned herself in the River Yarra on the
13th inst. A youth named William Archer
deposed he was playing cricket in a paddock
on Thursday last, when he saw the deceased,
who was then half drank, walk towards the
Yarra, and soon after he saw boats
well out in the river. The deceased, who
was a domestic servant, was addicted to
drink,and her mistress sent her on a message,
but she remained out all night and spent
some of the money she was sent out with to
make purchases. The body was recovered
soon after the occurrence. The jury re
turned a verdict that she drowned herself
while of unsound mind from drinking.
A third inquest was held by Dr. Youl
yesterday, at Sandridge, on the body of
Wm. Dollman, aged fifty-four years, a
watchman on board the ship Nomad. The
deceased died suddenly about four o'clock
on Sunday morning, and the medical evi
dence of Dr. W. S. Smythe, of Sandridge,
went to show that death was not due to any
violence, but to an aneurism of the aorta;
and a verdict was returned accordingly.
Another inquest was held at tho same place
by Dr. Yonl, yesterday, on the body of Robert
Parker, aged fifty years, who was killed by
a fall of earth at an excavation for a now
gasometer at the South Melbourne Gas
Company's works, on Saturday last. The
deceased was driving under a moss of earth
several tons in weight, when he turned
round and asked one of his fellow-laborers
for a shovel. His mate was just in the act of
handing him tho shovel, when the mass fell
and crushed him to death.
Dr. Yonl held an inquest at Emerald-hill
yesterday, on the body of Joseph Neoly,
aged thirty years, a laborer. The deceased
hod keen drinking for the last eighteen
months, and he died rather suddenly
on the 16th inst. Mr. Sturt, of Emerald-
hill, snrgeon,. made a post mortem
examination, and . found the ; cause of
! death to be alcoholic poisoning. The de
ceased was seen . staggering abont under the
influence of liquor on Saturday night last,
and a man named Fox asked him to go
home, and for that purposo be placed tho
deceased in a cab, bat he died directly after
he had got into the vehicle. A verdict of
death from alcoholic poisoning was re
turned, '
