. NEWSY.
It is notified in the Gocera/mant Gasxtlz
December 29 that land in -ludesl within the.
boundaries of Reserve G961 is to be classed
town and suburban, to form a townsile
within Mt. Margaret Goldfield, hereinafter
to be known and > distinguished as Mt:
Morgans, . ' " -
. /At the ?yiud.-up. meeting of the tia^ertotovi
Tuesday evening, it was ascertained thai,
after all liabilities bad been discharged, a,
surplus of something like £10 woidd
remain. To show their appreciation of the
services rendered by the one who had borne,
the lion's share of the work in the management
of the sports, viz., the lion, secretary,
it was decided that a sum of £3 should be-,
donated to Mr. C. J. Callanan. It was also .
decided, in order to continue consistent and
straightforward, to publish a balance-sheet
in the columns of the local paper, giving a
full statement of receipts _and expenditure,
ill owing how the money of the public was"
disposed of. The committee are to be con- y
gratulated from all standpoints on the very
successful issue to which the first sports
meeting at Laverton was brought.
A young man named Win.- Brown was
arrested on a charge of vagrancy on Wedn2sday
morning by Corporal Feeley. He
was bailed out during the day, and on
Thursday morning was presented before Dr.
Hurst, J.P., who discharged the accused,
and ordered him to leave the town. Brown
won the Sheffield Handicap at Laverton on
Monday. He-was protested against, and
on Tuesday jiight he was called before the
committee, to whom he promised he wouid
make a sta tutory declaration in the morning -
as to the correctness of his performances.
At the time appointed Brown was on the
chain, and although rather novel, the \
declaration was taken, and later on the ;
money was paid over to him. There does:
not appear to be any previous police record
against Brown.
The cut track from Laverton to the Euro
was finished on Thursday, and on beiug
chained off on Friday morning by Mr. Callanan
and the contractor wq,s found tq measure
miles. The whole cost of clearing the
track amounted to £43 7s 6il, the contractors
dividend being £36 5s. The remainder
was for cutting the lines: The job was
passed yesterday as first-class, and the
money paid over.
The result of the consultation on the
Perth Cuj», promoted locally by Messrs. H.,
'Kitson and W. Heffernau, was as follows".-^*
1st horse (Carbinier), C. JFelis, Laverton,
£40 10s; 2nd (Euglo), G. H."Bray, Malcolm,
£8 2s ; 3rd (Islamite), F. W. Spenee, Laverton,
£5 t?s. The sweep closed with 240
subscribers.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
Despite the hint in ojir last issue as to the
likelihood of the advent of a gang of spielers
and thieves during the sportg'jjje.efing at*
Laverton, two or three robberies occurred.
On Saturday £5 5s was stolen from the bar
of McCalnjont's hotel, the money being the
proceeds of the sate of tickets by Miss Kitty
Lennen in a local consultation Qii the Perth
Cup. The money was in a glass on the bar
shejf, and when in the act of arranging the
latter Miss Lennen must have put the glass
containing the money on the counter temporarily.
-However, later on in the day,
when the money was being collected by tile
promoters, it was not lo lie found.- A more
daring robbery of £34 10s, from the bedroom
of Miss Lennen, took place on Thursday
forenoon. This young lady had taken charge
of the money on the previous night for a
odger, and left it in her room on the followorning
while attending to her household
uties. The money was there at 11 o'clock,
ut an hour later it had gone. In this case
r. McCalmont 1b the loser of the amount.
trong suspicions of the culprits in both
ases are held, but as the notes cannot be, .
raced it is useless to hope.for the recovery^
f any of the "boodle." On New Years".
ay, Mr. Robinson, of the Ballarat Store,
eft his premises for about 20 minutes, and
n his return, to his great surprise, found
hat his shop had been broken into,, and
rapery to the extent/of about ab.

The premises of Mr. Dunbar, Mt! Morgan,
were burnt to the ground on Boxing Night.
The building was a hessiau structure, and
soon became a prey to the devouring element.
Fortunately, Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar
escaped uuiujured, although they lost
heavily by the disaster.
Writes our Mt. Morgan correspondent:—
" I regret having to retard the death of the
infant son of Mr. Joseph Allen, an employee
at the Mt. Morgan mine. This was the
first birth we had in the towns^T, and the'
little stranger remained with us '/or only tlie
brief space of 10 weeks. Ureat sympathy
Is felt for the bereaved parents, who are
well known and. much respected here.
An exchange says:—The other day Mr.
; Evan E. Allanson, storekeeper of Mt. Morgan,
Ayas married to Miss Simeon. Tue
ceremony, which took place at Kookynie,
was conducted by the Rev. F. R. H. Holmes.
Mr. and Mrs. Allanson have gone for their
honeymoon trip to Adelaide, the home of
, the Irjle^r jom's parents.

Tenders for the conveyance of mails to
Mt. Weld were called in the Goce.nuw_.nt
Gazette sains time ago, but up to the present,
although we are aware of local tenders
having been-submitted, the authorities have "
made no announcement of the asceptanrje of
any tender. Why so long-winded? Cm it
be that the of{.-txpressed interpretation ot
W.A. (wait-a^while) is applicable.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the
Margaret Hospital will take'place on Wednesday
next.
It will be seen by our advertising
columns that tenders for 500 wood blocks
are required by Mr. Jos. Wohlherr who
also requires a cellar excavated. Mr.
Wohlherr is the holder of a provisional
certificate for.an huiel. and intends proceeding
wiLh tka erection of his building
without delay. The hotel is to be situated
on the block at present occupied by Mr. C.
M '
, O^lSslf M'Ornish, who whol^' is also 6 W tha ' A ' holder of a
certificate, is about to have his building
erer-ted on the corner almost opposite
M'Calmont's hotel. It is nibre than probable
that both these structures will be
completed within three months, and when
finished will, with the store of Mr. Jorgensen
at present in course of-erection, give
the ranin street a far more compact and
important appearance. When the Wardairs
otioes, for the building of which tenders
have been callei, have'been put into position
opposite the post office they will lend
a still further improved appearance.

The following telegraui was received by
11s on Thursday from Gordon and Gotch
anent an error which occurred in the drawing
of W. A. Tattersall's (Charles') consultation
on the Perth Cup:—At the drawing
of W. A. Tattersall's (J. Charles) Perth Cap
, sweep of 50,090 at 5s, closing with 34,020
subscribers, by an unfortunate error 8 trays
containing 4,000 marbles Nos. 25,031 "to.
29,003 were omitted from drawing. It was
not until after the res dt J-lips had been
printed, and money of the winners, includi ng
the drawers of the placed horses, had beea
notified that the error was discovered. Mr.
Charles at once notified by advertisement
that the error had occurred, aud immediately
placed the matter for decision before a-coinmittee
of well-known goldfields and Perth
residents, who decided the drawing should,
stand less the 4,00'J subscribers, who can
receive their money back or tickets in future
sweep. Much sympathy is expressed with
Mr. Charles and commendation of his prompt
and straight conduct has been heightened
by rumqrs of the city that the error was the
resuljjof ^carefully-planned scheme to injure
W. A. Tattersqll ill the eyes of the public of
this and the other colonies.
